Windows 7, 32 or 64 bits?

Beitrag von Gubaru.jp »

Hello everyone,

I'm a big fan of FH2 and thinking about buying a new computer.
My question is: what are the pros and cons of Windows 7 32 bits vs. 64 bits?

There is a lot of confusing information out there, including people complaining about not being able to run FH2 on 64 bits.

Do you have any recommendations?
:0g: :0g: :0g:

Thank you for your time!

It depends on the computer you'd like to buy. Have you got a special offer, you could show (or any specifacations?)? Otherwise none of us can make any usefull recommendations.

And as far as I tested it, FH2 runs fine on 64bit systems (I'm using Vista 64bit). Even the older Mods for BF42 work with some adjustments. So I think the people complaining are simply unable to use google .

Agreed, no problems with Win7 x64
i guess it just comes down to how much you are willing to spend on a new computer.

Hello again,

And thanks for the replies!
The configuration looks like this:

Intel Corei7-920
Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit
9GB DDR3
2TB RAID
NVIDIA GeForce GTX260 (1.8GB)

1.8 gigabytes on a video card... can't wait to see what happens!
Maybe I will fly past everyone else on my Kuebelwagen :0n:

definitely 64bit. everything else is a waste of recourses.
But how you split 9GBytes? A Triple-Kit 3GB Sticks?

3x2048 + 3x1024
But yeah, it seems a bit stupid. I might as well go for 6x2048...

In any case, thank you all for the advice.
I will go for a 64bit setup!

Your motherboard has 6 RAM slots? Wow not bad.
I wouldn't mix 1GB and 2 GB Sticks, that can always slow your system down (at least that was what I was brought up with).

Definitely go for 6x2GB.

3*2GB is more then enough for an average PC-user, 6*2gb is total overkill. The money you safe with it I would invest in other hardware. You can always buy an additional 3*2Gb in the future if you need it which I doubt.

What's the screensize/resolution you are going to play at. Also which RAID (Stripe, mirror etc) are you planning to use.

Hi Magnus,

I don't know yet about the resolution, but my 24-inch monitor supports up to 1920x1200 (Eizo S2410W).
As you can see, the graphics card is overkill too, with 1.8Gb of onboard memory.

I expect I will have to test the game on the system to identify any compatibility problems.

But first, I have to actually buy the computer!
Japan is in a deflationary spiral right now, so the prices are constantly going down...

An GTX260 (216) MSI Lightning perhaps? isn't an overkill if you game at 24" 1920x1200 with all eyecandy on. Do not get fooled by the 1792MB memory, that 260 still uses the same core speed as the 892MB one. Beside that it will probably hold back your I7 920 and it uses the slower gddr3 memory.

I would buy a Radeon HD5850 (or even an 5870) instead of a GTX260, it has gddr5 memory, directx 11 (window 7) and a lower energy consumption. It's more expansive then the gtx260 but better and, with the money you would safe on the memory modules, it will not cost you more.

If you play any modern games or going to play them you can better have a modern GPU and 6gb memory, than an older gtx260 and 12gb memory.

My computer has 3x2gb memory, i have six slots but its not worth the money to overbuy memory. i have the basic i7 processor and a GTS250 with 1g Gddr3 memory. With this setup i can run FH and others on a 26 inch monitor (1920x1200) on high grafic with no problems. i can see why you'd want these newfangled  :0j: contraptions, but i dont have any problems with my lower end setup.

also, if Gddr3 is slower, i have never experienced a lag or issues of that sort with my card.

I have a Asus 5770 1gb which performs simular as the GTX260 1792gb. Let's see my card costs EUR 150,- uses less power and support dx11 (I have W7 ultimate x64). The GTX260 1792 costs EUR 200,- uses more power and doesnt support dx11, tough choise.

You call the new Ati cards "newfangled contraptions" which are better and cheaper then the current Nvidia one's  :0j:. Your GTS250 is what you call a fine example of a Nvidia marketing trick.
it’s the GeForce GTX 9800+, a die-shrunk version of the GeForce GTX 9800, which was already a slightly-overclocked re-introduction of the GeForce 8800 GTS. It's basicly a repacked GTX9800 with a new name stamped on it
I doubt you can play a modern game with a GTS250 at that resolution with AA and AF on max and still get a decent fps. Also I didn't say gddr3 causes lag, it's just slower. He shouldn't get fooled by the large ammount of memory on the gtx260. The GTX260 with 1.8gb gddr3 is just as fast as my 5770 1gb gddr5.
